“Christianity, community and social concern”

Long-standing SACH Trustee R J (“Reg”) Ash's solidly-researched and recently-published, splendid “History of the Liverpool Domestic Mission Society from 1836”... to the time he became Warden in 1969, is now on sale. All profits of the sale, price £10, we think, go to Send a Child.

Reg is currently writing his “memoirs” as Warden ( a sort of “History”, part 2 ), and we wish him speedy progress in that eneterprise!

Bentley Operatic Society are giving a Concert in aid of Send a Child at Ullet Road Unitarian Church, Liverpool, on Saturday, 7th July 2012. Thank you in advance to their members.

Our 50th Anniversary Appeal is up and Running!

Thank you already to those individuals and organisations who have made donations - both considerable and small!

Individual folk...

are doing all sorts of things to raise money for us:

Charlie (5) and Joseph (7) Helliwell sold unwanted toys at the Underbank Chapel, Stannington, Table Top Sale.

Stella Burney, Nightingale Centre Manager, said thank you to Maggie Lowthian for the splendid patches on her damaged favourite dungarees with a donation to SACH... and is entering the Endurer Challenge for which she hopes to get sponsorship on behalf of the 'Send A Child to Hucklow Fund.' Anyone interested in supporting Stella in this grueling event can do so by visiting the Nightingale Centre web site www.thenightingalecentre.org.uk

Some people have “Jars of Grace” to collect small change...

IT IS TRUE! The SACH Hon. Treasurer, David Ogden, is in preparation for the London Marathon on 22nd April. He has this to say...

“...With less than three months to go, I have launched my London Marathon Virgin Money Giving page.

I run regularly, but this is the first time I have asked for sponsorship for a long time. I would be grateful for any donations. See http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/DavidMOgden

I am also pleased to have received a message of support from David Bedford. See: http://www.marathonnewstv.com/?f=David%20M&;l=Ogden&v=DavidMOgden&n=1

Please feel free to publicise these links. I have prepared a paper sponsor form as well for people who prefer to donate by cash or cheque. See [ Sponsor Form ].

Thank you for your support.

WE HAVE ANOTHER RUNNER TOO! Sue Wooley, Secretary of the Unitarian Association for Lay Ministry, invites sponsorship for a 10km race in May. She already has over £300 of sponsorship from participants in the recent FUSE gathering – “South of the Trent”!
Thank you to them both!

Congregations...

Urmston had a “Lucky Dip” when visiting Great Hucklow.

Several congregations had a variety of Christmas collections – York, Bradford, Cross Street Manchester, Bury, Mansfield, York (an appeal througout December), Flowery Field.

Horwich made a generous donation, and Ipswich have held a variety of “bits&bobs” sales.

Revs John (a SACH Trustee) and Beryl Allerton held an “At Home”.

Special Services have been held at York, Cirencester, Oldham, Mansfield ( with some SACH children and leaders ), Kendal.

We apologise if someone has been left out: we're only human!

Who We Are

“Send-a-Child-to-Hucklow” Fund is a Trust to arrange and administer holidays at the Unitarian Holiday Centre, Great Hucklow, Derbyshire in the United Kingdom for groups of disadvantaged children, having no regard to religious, political, racial and other considerations.

Begun formally in 1961, on the initiative of Rev Peter Godfrey, the present Chair of Trustees, and Rev Glyn Pruce, to continue the tradition of the origin of Unitarian Holiday and Convalescent Homes in Great Hucklow at the end of the 19th Century, the Trust became a Registered Charity (No. 271585) in 1976.

With a few exceptions for special circumstances, all the holidays are offered at what is now known asThe Nightingale Centre”, echoing the original name of the main building on the Great Hucklow site.

The first holidays were in 1962: we look forward to the Golden Jubilee in 2012!

Reading about kids “sent to Hucklow” – and home again! - in the ‘60s This might well bring tears to the eyes. The kids today may, just may, be wearing the latest football shirts, but underneath the need is the same…
